التقويم القومي الكلداني / أهلاً بشهر آب Abu is an Akkadian name refers to the Mesopotamian deity of vegetation. This minor god was in no time taken over by the god Ningishzida (sumerian: dnin-g̃iš-zid-da) who was an underworld god, also known as Ninzzid and Gishzid. Jacobsen translated his name to "lord of the good tree". Ab is the month of the heat needed to ripen (dates and grapes) and practicing passionate relationships. This three in one climates’ month is a month of essential changes, which ancient Mesopotamians could easily experience: extreme hot, ripeness that required mild heat, and then knocking on winter’s door! The deep roots of this month go back to our Proto-Kaldi ancestors who used to honor the ultimate hero Gilgamesh in August by celebrating his unmatchable heroic achievements. The Mesopotamian heroes and athletes gathered and publicly competed in boxing, swimming wrestling and a kind of ancient long marathon. The idea behind this sports festival is to follow the footsteps of Gilgamesh during his journeys toward immortality.
