The following is a list of current Assyrian and towns and villages. A substantial number of Assyrians Chaldeans in the Middle East live in cities and not rural areas because of events during the 20th century (see Assyrian genocide.) These cities include Arbil, Dohuk, Mosul, Baghdad, Kirkuk, Basra, Tehran, Urmia, Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Istanbul. Inhabitants of these villages and towns are Assyrian Chaldean people who speak Aramaic and follow primarily the Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Syriac Catholic Church and Ancient Church of the East. Most are in northern Iraq, northwestern Iran, southeastern Turkey and northeastern Syria, a region in and around the traditional and historic Assyrian Chaldean homeland.
Currently, there are a number of villages in northern Iraq that are emptied. This is mostly due to the Al-Anfal Campaign of the 1980s.
