The following is a list of current Chaldean and towns and villages. A substantial number of Chaldeans in the Middle East live in cities and not rural areas because of events during the 20th century (see Chaldean genocide.) These cities include Arbil, Dohuk, Mosul, Baghdad, Kirkuk, Basra, Tehran, Urmia, Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Istanbul. Inhabitants of these villages and towns are Chaldean people who speak Chaldean Neo-Aramaic and follow primarily the Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Syriac Catholic Church and Ancient Church of the East. Most are in northern Iraq, northwestern Iran, southeastern Turkey and northeastern Syria, a region in and around the traditional and historic Chaldean homeland .
